The so-called "10 lectures on unity" delivered by Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te have again exposed his sinister intent to rely on foreign forces to seek "Taiwan independence" and use military means to pursue independence, a mainland spokesperson said on Wednesday.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks in response to questions regarding Lai's recent address, in which he touched upon cross-Straits relations.
He said Lai's remarks run counter to the mainstream public opinion on the island of Taiwan, which desires peace and development, disregarding the safety and well-being of the Taiwan compatriots.
Chen added that Lai is stubborn on the path of selling out and destroying Taiwan in the name of independence, deliberately inciting cross-Straits antagonism and jeopardizing the peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits while labeling Lai as "a peace destroyer," "a thorough war monger," and "a notorious troublemaker."
Lai's advocacy of the so-called fight for Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Mazu is, in fact, a fight for the interests of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) alone and his obsession with "Taiwan independence." He is willing to sacrifice innocent civilians by tying them to the "Taiwan independence" chariot, sending young people to the battlefield to become the victims of his separatist scheme, said Chen.
He further criticized Lai's fear-mongering about a so-called military threat from the mainland, saying such claims are merely a cover for his aggressive separatist agenda. Lai's remarks about standing with "democratic countries" were seen as an open plea for external interference, trading Taiwan's future for foreign backing through "protection fees" and political posturing.
The spokesperson reiterated the firm stance of the mainland that "Taiwan independence" separatism is the greatest disaster to Taiwan. "As long as 'Taiwan independence' separatists exist, there will be no peace in the Taiwan Straits. The deeper Lai delves into "seeking independence," the more he harms Taiwan."
"Only by resolutely opposing and effectively curbing 'Taiwan independence' separatism can we safeguard genuine peace across the straits and ensure that people in Taiwan can live in peace and security," the spokesperson emphasized.
He reaffirmed that both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one China, and that Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Mazu are all part of China's sacred territory. The people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits are all Chinese, said Chen, noting that as long as there is no "Taiwan independence" separatism, both sides can share peace and pursue development together.
Chen said the mainland will never tolerate or allow any form of separatist behavior. "We have the firm will, strong determination, and powerful capability to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to crush all separatist plots," he said.
Chen also called on Taiwan compatriots to view the situation from the perspective of national interests and their own well-being, to stand firmly against separatism, and to work together to preserve peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits.
