HIROSHIMA, Japan: As part of their larger joint statement scheduled for release next week at a summit in Hiroshima, Japan, leaders of the Group of Seven countries are expected to express concern about China's use of "economic coercion" in its global dealings.
The G7 leaders are also expected to release a broader written proposal on how their economies can work together to counter "economic coercion" from any country, which will include a section specific to China" that will mention "economic coercion and other behavior that we have seen, specifically from Beijing."
A separate "economic security statement will speak more to tools" used to counter coercive efforts from any countries responsible, including planning and coordination.
The statements are expected to be more critical than prior statements by the G7, which includes the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the UK, which have close economic relations to China, the world's largest exporter and a key market for many companies from G7 countries.
In April, China called a similar statement by G7 foreign ministers "full of arrogance and prejudice against China" and lodged complaints with Japan, this year's G7 host.
During the summit, G7 members are also likely to hold out the prospect of further cooperation with China in other areas, such as climate.
Before the declarations are released during the summit, negotiations over the precise language of the leaders' joint declarations are still subject to further discussions and adjustments.
