ATLANTA, Georgia: Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has signed a bill into law that will empower the state to discipline and remove "far-left prosecutors" who are "making our communities less safe."

At the Chatham County Sheriff's Office in Savannah, Kemp signed the measure to create the Prosecuting Attorneys Qualifications Commission, which will launch on 1st July and begin accepting complaints on 1st October.

"I am not going to stand idly by as rogue or incompetent prosecutors refuse to uphold the law," Kemp said.

The new law in Georgia is in line with efforts by other states, including Florida and Indiana, to remove prosecutors, as well as broader debates around the US on how certain criminal offenses should be prosecuted.

It also continues national anti-crime campaigns launched by Republicans last year, which accused Democrats of being soft on criminals and improperly refusing to prosecute certain categories of crimes, including marijuana possession.

Georgia Democrats have opposed the measure, stressing that the Republican legislative majority aims to impose its will on local Democratic voters.

"I strongly oppose an excessive and unnecessary commission, as district attorneys are already held accountable under existing laws and through the current democratic process of holding election," said Deborah Gonzalez, Democratic district attorney for Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties, as quoted by Reuters.

The efforts aimed at curbing prosecutors have had mixed results around the country.

An Indiana bill, originally written to allow an oversight board appoint a special prosecutor when a "noncompliant" prosecutor refuses to charge certain crimes, appears dead for this year.

In Florida, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis suspended State Attorney Andrew Warren in Tampa's Hillsborough County in August.

A federal judge ruled that DeSantis illegally targeted Warren because he is a Democrat who publicly supported abortion and transgender rights, but he wrote that he had no power to reinstate Warren, which led to an appeal to the state Supreme Court.
