WASHINGTON D.C.: US Senator Michael Bennet has introduced a bill aimed at creating the AI Task Force, to assess US policies on artificial intelligence (AI), as well as identify ways of reducing threats to privacy, civil liberties and due process.
Authorities around the globe are scrambling to find ways to regulate AI, which has been used for years to create text, imagery and other content, due to the growing use of ChatGPT and other AI platforms.
National security experts, including in Washington, are seeking to counter the use of AI by foreign adversaries.
The AI Task Force, which could include cabinet members, will identify shortfalls in regulatory oversight of AI and recommend appropriate reforms.
"There is going to have to be a lot of education around this set of issues because they are not well understood. There is going to be a lot of improvisation and iterative approaches to try to wrestle with this because AI is so new to everyone in the government," Democrat Bennet said.
The task force would work for 18 months, issue a final report and then shut down, under the terms of the bill.
