LOS ANGELES, Californias: New rules approved by California state regulators last week aimed at weaning the state off fossil fuels will mean that large trucks and buses that run on diesel cannot be sold in California beginning in 2036.
Aimed at reducing pollution caused by heavy trucks that transport goods through ports, the new rule will require companies to disclose their use of "drayage trucks" by 2024, though the regulations cannot be implemented without approval by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
It is also part of to standards approved by the Biden administration last month to phase out diesel-powered box trucks, semitrailers and large passenger pick-ups.
If approved by the EPA, other states could later adopt the same standards as California.
In a statement, California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom said the move is an opportunity to show "the world what real climate action looks like."
"We are one step closer to achieving healthier neighborhoods and cleaner air for all Californians," he added.
In response, the American Trucking Associations said the rule was "unrealistic," noting that it was worried about the expense of a drastic shift to zero-emission vehicles, and claiming that the vehicle-charging infrastructure is not ready for the transition.
In a statement, the group said, "As it becomes clear that California's rhetoric is not being matched by technology, we hope the Board will reverse course and allow trucking companies the freedom to choose the clean technologies that work best for their operations."
Emissions from trucks have already gone down drastically in recent decades, it added.
According to the California Air Resources Board, heavy-duty vehicles account for some 3 percent of vehicles on California roads, but they generate more than half of nitrogen oxides and fine particle diesel pollution.
