WASHINGTON D.C.: In a major step toward expanding the wind power industry into northern New England, the Biden administration has announced that it has allocated an area measuring some 10 million acres in the Atlantic Ocean's Gulf of Maine for offshore wind development.
The move is the latest part of the government's plan to end fossil fuel for power generation and combat climate change, by placing wind turbines along the US coastline.
The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said it will implement a 45-day period for public comment on the area located off the coasts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.
The final "call area" was designated after receiving feedback from tribes, states, the Department of Defense, fishing and shipping industries and the public, it added.
According to the bureau, energy companies, including Orange, Connecticut-based Avangrid, France's TotalEnergies SE and Germany's RWE AG, have expressed interest in developing offshore wind power in the Gulf of Maine.
As the depth of the water prevents the use of standard, fixed equipment, wind turbines that float on the ocean's surface, an emerging technology, are required for projects in the Gulf of Maine.
In 2022, the Biden administration set a goal for 5 million homes to be powered by floating offshore wind by 2035.
