WASHINGTON D.C.: In a bid to enlarge its influence in a jittery Asia, the US will propose increasing their nuclear deterrences on North Korea during this week's White House meetings with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.
President Joe Biden will propose new nuclear deterrence efforts, along with a cyber security initiative, economic investments and an educational partnership with South Korea.
This will be part of efforts to mark the 70th anniversary of the US-South Korea alliance, according to White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan.
White House officials say Biden will reassure the South Koreans about the "iron clad" commitment to deterring nuclear attacks by North Korea, even as Pyongyang has increased ballistic missile tests, including the first flight of a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile.
Sullivan said the new US proposals are part of efforts to send a clear message to North Korea about its aggressive rhetoric.
"What I will say is that we believe that the statement will send a very clear and demonstrable signal of the United States' credibility when it comes to its extended deterrence commitments to the Republic of Korea and to the people of Korea," Sullivan said, as quoted by the Associated Press.
Biden, said officials, will also use the South Korean visit to underscore the importance of South Korea and Japan security alliances.
Last week, the United States, Japan and South Korea held
a joint missile defense exercise to demonstrate how it might counter North Korea's growing nuclear arsenal.
Besides his White House meetings, Yoon will deliver a speech to the U.S. Congress on Thursday, after which he will speak at the Harvard Kennedy School in Boston.
