FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida: Torrential downpours last week submerged southeast Florida, with rainfall in the Fort Lauderdale region totaling more than 24 inches, causing widespread flooding that blocked roads and closed schools and an airport.
The National Weather Service said that some 25 inches of rain fell in Fort Lauderdale, with some 2 million people in Broward County being under a flood warning, and Florida's Atlantic Coast north of Miami already seeing 20 inches of rain over several days.
"It is extremely rare. That is an astronomical amount of rainfall," said Miami National Weather Service meteorologist Shawn Bhatti, as quoted by Reuters.
No injuries or deaths have been reported.
"This thing has been parked for hours. Like putting a faucet right over Fort Lauderdale, turning it on, and walking away," tweeted meteorologist Alex Lamers.
On its website, Fort Lauderdale said emergency management crews answered numerous rescue calls, and there were flood conditions throughout the area.
According to tracking site Flightaware, a flooded runway resulted in some 400 inbound and outbound flights being canceled at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
The heavy rains and flooding also forced Broward County Public Schools, serving some 250,000 students, to cancel classes.
