TAIPEI, Taiwan: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co will hire an additional 6,000 engineers in 2023, according to company officials.
TSMC is the world's largest contract chipmaker.
Industry observers have taken note that the TSMC hirings come during a worldwide downturn in the chip industry.
TSMC has said it will seek to hire new engineers with associates, bachelor's, masters's or doctorate degrees in electrical engineering or software-related fields, to work in cities across Taiwan.
Further, company officials said the average salary with benefits of a new engineer with a master's degree is $65,578.
Overall, the semiconductor industry has been in a slump due to a decline in demand for electronics and high inventory levels caused by a shortage of some chips.
Further, chip maker Intel Corp has said it would reduce payments to mid-level staff and executives from 5 to 25 percent.
TSMC has been able to maintain its core business due to its manufacturing some of the most advanced chips for high-end customers, such as Apple.
TSMC saw a small reduction in 2023 capital expenditure for 2023 and has announced that it anticipates a drop in first-quarter revenues. It also has said it expects demand to increase in the second half of 2023.
