WASHINGTON D.C.: In its Short Term Energy Outlook released this week, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said amidst economic growth, U.S. power consumption is predicted to rise to record highs in 2022 and 2023.
Compared with an eight-year low of 3,856 billion kWh in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and an all-time high of 4,003 billion kWh in 2018, the EIA expects power demand to climb to 4,010 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in 2022 and 4,019 billion kWh in 2023, from 3,930 billion kWh in 2021.
It also forecasts 2022 power sales to hold at 1,477 billion kWh for residential consumers, though the figure for commercial customers will rise to 1,363 billion kWh, as more people return to work in offices, along with 1,026 billion kWh for industrials.
In 2022, the share of natural gas used in overall power generation will hold at 37 percent, the same as in 2021, but it will drop to 36 percent in 2023, while coal's share will drop from 23 percent in 2021 to 21 percent in 2022, and 20 percent in 2023 due to renewables, the EIA added.
Also, the percentage of renewable generation will rise from 20 percent in 2021 to 22 percent in 2022 and 24 percent in 2023, while nuclear power will decrease from 20 percent in 2021 to 19 percent in 2022, before returning to 20 percent in 2023, it added.
