BEIJING, China - Amid a flurry of U.S. arrivals and a senior official's recent meetings with Tibetan refugee leaders in Kathmandu, Beijing has obliquely conveyed to Kathmandu that Nepal's One-China policy should not be influenced by any other factors-internal or external.
The Chinese side expressed concerns about the U.S. Under Secretary of State Uzra Zeya's visits to at least two Tibetan camps in Nepal during the 14th meeting of the Nepal-China Bilateral Consultative Mechanism.
"The Chinese side avoided mentioning the meeting, but the message was generally clear," a meeting participant told the press on anonymity.
The Nepal-China Joint Consultation Mechanism is led by Nepal's foreign secretary and China's vice minister of foreign affairs.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the forum helps discuss all aspects of bilateral relations.
Nepal's Foreign Secretary Bharat Raj Paudyal and Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Jianghao led their delegations.
During her three-day visit to Nepal on May 20-22, Zeya, who is also the special coordinator for Tibetan refugees for the Joe Biden administration, met with Tibetan refugee leaders in Kathmandu, despite Nepal's objections.
The Foreign Ministry had stated hours before her arrival that it was unaware of her meetings with Tibetan refugee leaders.
Around 15,000 Tibetan refugees live in Nepal.
According to officials, the Nepali side reiterated to the Chinese side that Nepal strongly supports the One-China policy and is committed to not allowing its soil to be used against its neighbors.
"The Chinese side appreciated Nepal's commitment," the official explained.
