TOKYO, Japan - A Tokyo court has denied the bail request of former Nissan Motor Co Ltd chief Carlos Ghosn on Tuesday.
The 64-year-old tycoon requested bail following fresh charges and was detained in a Japanese jail cell after a surprise arrest on November 19.
Prosecutors on Friday pressed formal charges against Ghosn on allegations of financial misconduct and breach of trust for transferring his personal financial problems to Nissan in 2008. He was also indicated for under-reporting his three-year salary through March 2018. Mr. Ghosn has denied all the charges claiming he was wrongly accused and unfairly detained.
Ghosns arrest is a big shock to the business world. His arrest has also sparked international criticisms of the Japans legal system, which allows prosecutors to detain their suspects while investigations are ongoing. Japans legal system also permits lengthy pre-trial detention once charges have been filed.
Ghosns wife, Carole Ghosn, has alleged her husband is being detained in harsh conditions and subjected to interrogations in order to extract a confession. While writing to Human Rights Watch, Mrs. Carole pressed the government to change its draconian system of pretrial detention and interrogation.
However, the deputy chief prosecutor Shin Kukimoto has defended the investigation procedures in Japan saying that he had expected overseas criticism.
